Odessa Mahony-de Vries
Odessa Mahony-de Vries is a visual artist who specialises in painting with mixed media on canvas and plywood. From the age of 9, the now 22-year-old artist has always had a playful curiosity about the materiality of paint. After graduating secondary schooling on the Sunshine Coast she moved to Melbourne Victoria to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) Degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
For the past four years, Odessa’s art practice has focused on abstract painting and developing a visual language that is forever evolving as she exposes herself to new and exciting experiences. Some of these activities include travelling to India and Nepal, driving along the Great Ocean Road and a recent artist residency where she locked herself in a jail cell for 8 hours with a set of instructions for painting. Her making process is a combination of mistakes, intuition, movement, layering, concealing and a collection of visual resolutions and techniques acquired over time.
Odessa’s recent shows include a solo exhibition titled ‘Sweet & Sour’ at The United Artist Project and a duo exhibition with Amanda Bennetts titled “Experience Colour” at the Old Ambulance Station. Her latest residency was at the Old Lockup in Maroochydore where she engaged the public in an experimental project. Later this year you can expect to see her work in a solo show at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts centre and a duo show at Cool Art in Coolum.
